So the other morning I wake up, go downstairs to drink my tea and make breakfast and what do I hear but talk radio? I go over to turn it off and I catch this:
"So who is JT Leroy if he's not real?"
And I almost choke on my tea. JT LeRoy is the author of
The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, a book I had mixed feelings about and have yet to re-read because it was pretty damn confrontational.
What do they mean he's not real??
I found this online and apparently he was a complete invention of this woman Laura Albert, who has at least one other alter ego beyond JT. She sold everyone the story that he was a homeless teenage prostitute looking to turn his life around by writing about his hooking experiences and abusive childhood at the hands of his teenage mother, Sarah.
With this story Laura solicited editorial advice from celebrity authors such as Dave Eggers and their agents, got her book not only published but established a cult celebrity following and with this publicity garnered enough attention (by having a friend pose as LeRoy in signature blonde wig and big sunglasses) to have a movie adaptation made of
The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things starring, among others, Marilyn Manson as his stepfather.
First: this is manipulative.
Secondly: this is hilarious.
I don't think it's ethical to have taken such advantage of so many people's good will, but reading the articles that are going up about this by people who were on the JT-Train and are now out of joint about being duped is really interesting.
I'm glad that these stories didn't happen to someone, and maybe now I can read them again with that in mind. At any rate, it makes for a great story!
